Despite efforts to end the scourge of antiBlack violence in the South, violence against Black bodies grew steadily throughout the 1870s. Fraternal organizations acted as paramilitary bodies during and after Reconstruction ended. These organizations were not simply the household names you might expect. They went by names like Bald Knobbers, Knights of the White Camellia, Red Shirts, White League, White Cappers, and in Denton County, "THE COMMITTEE."
